Taghazout – A paradise for surfers

Taghazout is located north of Agadir on the Atlantic coast in Morocco. The inhabitants of the village still live mainly from fishing. Another important source of income for them is tourism.

In the past, Taghazout was inhabited exclusively by the Berber tribe of Ida Oufella. In the 1960s, the village gained a certain degree of notoriety through the hippie movement. The young people of that time came to a beach south of the village to set up their base camp for exploring Morocco. Later, hotels for tourists were built on this site. Since then, it has been extremely popular, especially among surfers, but contrary to first appearances, it also has a lot to offer for sports enthusiasts.

There are many places around the town that are suitable for surfing. Both for beginners and for advanced skiers. In addition, there is a wide range of lessons. The whole town has created its offer around surfing.

Surf spots such as Devil’s Rock, Panorama and Banana Beach are particularly suitable for easy exercises for beginners and for advanced surfers, for example, the Killer, the Anchor Point or the Hash Point.

Taghazout Skatepark

A little higher up is the town’s skate park. The beautiful view of the sea makes a visit worthwhile even for travelers who don’t skate.
The skatepark was designed and built by volunteers. The creative design is also a real eye-catcher and apparently invites many locals and tourists to skate.
Here, too, lessons are offered – but only on certain days.

The Mountains of Taghazout

Behind the village stretches a mountain range that invites you to hike far away from the noise of the tourist town. Beautiful hiking trails run through the landscape.
Guided hikes including a food stop and guided tour to the caves in the area are also offered.

About 35 km from Taghazout lies an enchanted valley. At least that’s how it seems. Inconspicuous from a distance, a green oasis reveals itself along the Tamrhakht River. Palm trees, waterfalls and natural pools of water for swimming. The valley is considered one of the most beautiful in the south of Morocco.
The place is suitable for nature lovers, recreation seekers and daredevils alike. Whether you want to relax in one of the many pools in nature, cliff jump into the “pools of the daredevils” or hike on lonely paths through breathtaking landscapes, there is an opportunity for all of this.

Specialties of Taghazout

There are a number of good restaurants in the town that specialise in traditional Moroccan cuisine. But also well-known dishes, such as pizza, are served to the guests here.
In Morocco’s coastal towns, fish dishes with sardines are also particularly popular. Whether as fillet or in grilled form, you are guaranteed to stumble across these delicacies somewhere in Taghazout.

Tajine

A classic Moroccan dish is the tagine. And of course, this should not be missing in Taghazout. Tajine is prepared in the clay pot of the same name and is a stew. From vegetables to meat, everything can be prepared in the container. This is why there is not a single tagine recipe in Morocco, but several, which differ mainly from region to region.

Couscous

Couscous is the traditional Friday food of Morocco and is eaten by the locals with the right hand. Vegetables and lamb or chicken are usually served, but there are also several variations here – and among other things a sweet recipe.

Beghrir

Beghrir are small sweet pancakes made of semolina that are eaten with butter and honey. Thanks to many small holes in its structure, the honey is absorbed particularly well. The Beghrir are served for breakfast or as a dessert.
They also have the advantage for vegans that they are made without any animal products – if you neglect the side dishes.

Thé à la menthe

Green tea with peppermint leaves can be found almost everywhere in Morocco’s cities. It is, so to speak, the national drink of the country. It is often offered to visitors as a welcome drink. Here again the friendliness of the Moroccans is shown. Even in shops, you are often invited to a mint tea without further ado.
